A U.S. college student mental health crisis has worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic. Depression symptoms have risen sharply – from 26.2% (2017) to 48.1% (2020) – as have suicidal thoughts – from 10.8% (2017) to 18.0% (2020) (Lipson et al., 2019; Wang et al., 2020).
Importantly, students of color are often underrepresented in U.S. student mental health research, and mental health challenges of students of color are often under-identified and under-treated (Chen et al., 2019).
The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence is working with DEI thought leaders and Yale students to launch the Yale Equity in Student Well-Being Project.
This project will include a series of research studies on Yale College student mental health and resilience, along with well-being events, articles, resources, and community conversations.
Our goal is to better support diverse student wellness and thriving for all students during times of stress and uncertainty.
